Wind Down & Wake-up routines for Agents

If you’re anything like me, you’ve been up past midnight more than you care to admit with Claude. Anyone who's built software before AI knows that software engineering was already an infinite loop. Then I get snowed in the morning when I try to remember what I was actually doing! Claude knows this too.

I joke with my friends that coding with an agent is like riding a sandworm in Dune. It’s pretty awesome but you really need to be up for the ride.

So I built two skills for people who aggressively multitask with agentic coding tools: /wind-down and /good-morning. Both have improved my relationship to the work.

At night I run, /wind-down about 10 minutes before I want to be done. The skill sweeps every open session and notes what’s active and open: uncommitted changes, open pull request, a feature in mid-effort, recently merged PRs. Then it writes a single brief concisely summarizing the day’s work. I close the laptop with a complete picture of what I'm doing across repos, products and sessions.

In the morning, /good-morning re-parses the brief and checks things like telemetry, observability, test runs, maybe a review that landed (Codex and Claude talk all night) and hands me back a fresh morning brief.

I love them. So I’m sharing them. In a Claude Code session, run:

/plugin marketplace add majrdotapp/agent-services
/plugin install session-routines@agent-services

There’s nothing fancy here. They're both plain SKILL.md files in the open Agent Skills standard. In Codex, drop the two skill folders into ~/.agents/skills and call them with /skills. I recommend updating them with your analytics, observability and log stack. The agent’s tooling access should provide the rest.

A few things are tuned to Claude’s harness: it sweeps all your parallel sessions at once, gathers their state in parallel, and reads pull-request and CI status where it can. On an agent without those, it narrows to the workspace you’re in and writes the same brief.

You can get them here: https://github.com/majrdotapp/agent-services. If you add or improve them, I’d love to hear how.

These were inspired by Cal Newport. Cal has spent his life advocating deep work practices. Cal argues that a shutting down ritual is essential to letting your mind disconnect from all the open loops created during the day. It’s a clear boundary for you and your unconscious that results in better, more clear thinking..today and tomorrow.
